EU Security Funding Under SAFE Set to Boost Poland’s Defence

February 18, 2026

The European Commission has approved Poland’s participation in the EU’s SAFE programme, unlocking substantial financial support for defence modernisation and infrastructure development. The decision is being framed by the government as a milestone not only for national protection, but also for broader European stability.

As announced by Donald Tusk, Poland is expected to receive close to PLN 200 billion, making it the programme’s largest beneficiary. A large proportion of the funding is set to flow into domestic industry, reinforcing the country’s role in European defence cooperation and strengthening long-term security infrastructure investment across the region.

This is a watershed moment. SAFE was in part conceived and initiated by Poland. From the very first day of our government, we did everything to ensure that NATO’s eastern border became an important task for all of Europe.

Strategic Funding With Economic Impact

The new financing will support military modernisation, defence manufacturing, and projects designed to reinforce the eastern frontier, an area viewed as critical for both national protection and the stability of the NATO alliance.

Beyond defence, officials emphasise the economic dimension of the programme. The scale of planned investment is expected to accelerate technological development, strengthen supply chains, and enhance the overall business environment in Poland, particularly for firms involved in advanced manufacturing and strategic production.

The Prime Minister also underlined the financial scale of the initiative, noting that the SAFE funding allocated to Poland alone exceeds the annual defence spending of several major European economies.

What is SAFE?

SAFE (Security Action for Europe) is an EU financial mechanism designed to expand defence capabilities across member states. It provides large-scale funding, primarily through long-term financing instruments, to support equipment purchases, joint procurement initiatives, and coordinated development of Europe’s defence industry.
