May 16, 2024

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has announced that Jakub Pachocki will be stepping into the role of Chief Scientist following Ilya Sutskever’s departure from the company. Altman expressed his confidence in Pachocki’s leadership abilities, tweeting that he believes Pachocki “will lead us to make rapid and safe progress towards our mission.”

Altman’s tweet on X (formerly Twitter) stated, “Jakub is going to be our new Chief Scientist. Jakub is also easily one of the greatest minds of our generation; I am thrilled he is taking the baton here. He has overseen many of our most critical projects, and I am very confident he will lead us to make rapid and safe progress towards our mission of ensuring that AGI benefits everyone.”

Currently, Jakub is also conducting postdoctoral research in Jelani Nelson’s group at Harvard University, focusing on efficient algorithm design, particularly for machine learning applications. Before joining Harvard, he earned his PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University under the guidance of Gary L. Miller. Jakub’s academic journey began with a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Warsaw.
