Poland Becomes World’s 20th Largest Economy, Surpassing Switzerland

July 8, 2025

Poland has officially entered the ranks of the world’s 20 largest economies by nominal GDP, surpassing Switzerland according to recent projections. This development marks a historic milestone in the country’s post-communist transformation and reflects its growing economic influence on the global stage.

$980 Billion GDP Expected in 2025

Estimates from global financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, indicate that Poland’s nominal GDP in 2025 has reached $980 billion, securing 20th place worldwide. The country now stands just ahead of Switzerland and is closing the gap with larger economies such as Saudi Arabia and the Netherlands.

Speaking at the Warsaw Stock Exchange on Monday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk highlighted the significance of this economic achievement by reflecting on how far the country has come:

“10, 15 years ago, nobody would have believed that in 2025 the Polish economy would be larger than Switzerland’s. But today, it is.”

Exchange Rates Play a Key Role

Poland’s rise in the rankings has been driven by stable economic growth, strong domestic demand, and favorable currency dynamics, particularly the złoty’s performance in global markets. Structural reforms, European Union integration, and an export-oriented economy have also contributed to the upward trajectory.

However, experts caution that exchange rates continue to play a crucial role. According to Dr. Piotr Maszczyk of the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH), Poland’s position is still sensitive to fluctuations, particularly the złoty-to-dollar exchange rate versus the Swiss franc, which significantly affects nominal GDP measured in dollars.

Regional Leader with Global Ambitions

We can now proudly say that Poland is the world’s 20th-largest economy, the sixth-largest in the European Union, and the leading economy in Central and Eastern Europe.

Recent international attention confirms this growing status. Poland was featured prominently in the latest cover of The Economist, praised in international reports, and recognized by the Financial Times as one of the most promising investment destinations in Europe, particularly Warsaw, which is fast becoming a regional financial hub.
