Poland in the spotlight as OpenAI looks to expand in Europe

May 31, 2023

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is currently touring European cities in search of a suitable location for a new office. During an interview, Altman expressed interest in Poland as a potential research and engineering office location.

“Poland would be an interesting place. We want to do a research and engineering office in Europe, not a regulatory one. We are trying to figure it out. This is part of the goal of this trip.” Altman said.

CEO of OpenAI pointed out to Bloomberg News, during an event hosted by the University of Warsaw and the National Centre for Research and Development, that the crucial factor for selecting a potential location for a new office is the concentration of talented individuals in that area. He emphasized that Poland has a thriving IT industry, hosting major engineering hubs for companies like Alphabet, JP Morgan Chase, Visa, and CD Projekt, the creator of popular games such as The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077.

Altman’s statements come after his recent appearance before US senators, where he discussed his support for regulations in various areas, including combating election misinformation and ensuring transparency in AI-generated content. He also expressed support for Europe’s efforts to lead global AI regulation.
