Poland’s EU Presidency: Focus on Cybersecurity and AI

January 8, 2025

Poland’s EU presidency for the first half of 2025 has officially begun, with a clear focus on shaping Europe’s digital future. The main priorities in this area include strengthening cybersecurity, fostering innovation in AI and other digital technologies while ensuring ethical and secure development, streamlining and implementing consistent digital regulations, and promoting digital diplomacy.

Cybersecurity as a High Priority

During its six-month term, Poland aims to strengthen the European Union’s resilience to cyber threats by promoting a comprehensive and unified approach to cybersecurity. One of the primary objectives will be the establishment of a cohesive framework for managing large-scale cyber incidents across member states.

“A key goal will be the creation of a unified model for responding to large-scale incidents and a system for reporting all incidents,” the Polish Ministry of Digital Affairs, Krzysztof Gawkowski, stated.

This involves updating the EU’s Cyber Blueprint, a coordination framework for addressing cybersecurity crises, and fostering improved collaboration between civilian and military sectors.

Focus on Artificial Intelligence

Poland’s EU presidency will also spotlight the sustainable and secure growth of innovative AI technologies. The Ministry of Digital Affairs emphasized the importance of implementing the EU Artificial Intelligence Act and shaping a new EU-wide AI strategy. “This is a critical step to ensure AI applications are both innovative and aligned with ethical and security standards”.

Poland plans to enhance the efficiency and coherence of digital regulations within the EU, aiming to reduce administrative burdens for businesses. This effort seeks to encourage innovation and foster a digital-friendly environment for enterprises across the bloc.

Building Digital Bridges

In line with its presidency goals, Poland will prioritize strengthening external digital relations. The Ministry of Digital Affairs highlighted collaboration with EU candidate countries, particularly Ukraine and Moldova, as a cornerstone of its digital agenda.

“Digital transformation will be an added value for both member states and candidate countries,” the ministry said, emphasizing the role of technology in fostering closer ties and shared progress.

As the EU grapples with evolving cybersecurity threats and the rapid advancement of AI, Poland’s presidency seeks to lead efforts toward a more secure and digitally integrated Europe. The coming months will reveal how these priorities shape the EU’s digital future.
